Friday, the 29th Day of December, 1654.

Prayers.

Settling the Goverment.

THE House, according to former Order, resumed the Debate upon the Bill touching the Government.

The Ninth Chapter was read: And, after Debate, the same was amended in these Words; viz. "That, immediately after the Death of every Lord Protector, and after the Election of a succeeding Lord Protector, a Parliament be summoned to meet, if a Parliament be not then sitting, or not to meet within Four Months by Force of this Act, or not then already summoned:" Which was, upon the Question, agreed.

The Tenth Chapter was read.

The Question being put, That these Words, viz. "according to the Laws, and according to such Limitations as are or shall be agreed upon in Parliament," do stand;

It passed in the Negative.

Resolved, That these Words, viz. "according to the respective Laws and Customs of these Nations of England, Scotland, and Ireland, and the Dominions thereto belonging," be inserted into this Chapter.

Settling the Government.

THE Eleventh Chapter being read, was, upon the Question, agreed.

The Twelfth Chapter, being read, was, upon the Question, agreed.

The Thirteenth Chapter, being read, was, upon the Question, agreed.

The Fourteenth Chapter, being read, was, upon the Question, agreed.

The Fifteenth Chapter, being read, was, upon the Question, agreed.

The Sixteenth Chapter being read; after Debate, these Words, "any Person lawfully convicted of," in the First Clause, being omitted; the same was, upon the Question agreed.

The Second Clause being read; after Debate, these Words in this Clause, "any Person lawfully convicted of," being omitted, the same was, upon the Question, agreed.

The last Clause being read;

And the Question being put, To agree, that this Clause be Part of the Government.

The House was divided.

The Yeas went forth.

So it passed with the Affirmative.

The Seventeenth Chapter being read;

The Question being put, That this Chapter be committed;

The House was divided.

The Yeas went forth.

Colonel Morley, With the Yeas,
Sir Charles Wolsley, Tellers for the Noes: 81.
Lord Broghill, With the Noes,

So it passed with the Negative.

And the Question being put, That this Chapter be Part of the Government;

It passed with the Negative.

The Eighteenth Chapter was read.

Resolved, That this Chapter be part of the Bill.

The Nineteenth Chapter was read.

The Question being put, That these Words, "and the Council," do stand in this Clause;

It passed with the Negative.

The Twentieth Chapter was read.

And the Question being put, That these Words in this Chapter, viz. "over and besides the Two hundred thousand Pounds aforesaid," do stand;

It passed in the Affirmative.

And the Chapter being put to the Question, was agreed.

Ordered, That the Debate upon the Bill of Assessment, be adjourned till Wednesday next.

Ordered, That the Debate upon this Bill be adjourned until To-morrow Morning.
