Prayers.

THE Grand Committee, according to a former Order of the House, proceeded to the Consideration of the Ordinance for Raising of Twenty-one thousand Pounds monthly, towards the Pay of the Scotts Army under the Earl of Leven.

Mr. Corbett was called to the Chair.
Mr. Speaker resumed the Chair.

Ordered, That the Grand Committee of the House for the Ordinance for Raising of Twenty-one thousand Pounds monthly, towards the Pay of the Scotts Army, do meet on Friday Morning next, at Eight of Clock.

Ordered, That Sir Tho. Dacres do forthwith go down into the County of Herts, to employ his best Endeavours for the speedy bringing in the Arrears of the Scotts Monies in that County; and give a speedy Account of his Service therein, within Ten Days at furthest: And that he do resort to the Committee at Goldsmiths-Hall, to receive the best Directions he can for this Service.

Resolved, &c. That Sir Beauchamp St. Johns do forthwith go down into the County of Bedford, and desire the Assistance of Sir Sam. Luke; and employ their best Endeavours for the speedy bringing in the Arrears of the Scotts Monies in that County; and that they give a speedy Account of their Services therein, within Ten Days at furthest: And that Sir Beauchamp St. Johns do resort to the Committee at Goldsmiths-Hall, to receive the best Directions he can for this Service.

Ordered, That Sir Rich. Onslowe do forthwith go down into the County of Surry, to employ his best Endeavours for the speedy Bringing in of the Arrears of the Scotts Monies in that County; and give a speedy Account of his Service therein, within Ten Days: And that he do resort to the Committee at Goldsmiths-Hall, to receive the best Directions he can for this Service.

Resolved, &c. That Sir Tho. Parker do forthwith go down into the County of Sussex, and desire the Assistance of Colonel Downes; and employ their best Endeavours for the speedy Bringing in of the Arrears of the Scotts Monies in that County; and give a speedy Account of their Service therein, within Ten Days: And that Sir Tho. Parker do resort to the Committee at Goldsmiths-Hall, to receive the best Directions he can for this Service.

Resolved, &c. That Sir Gilb. Pykering do forthwith go down to the County of Northampton, to employ his best Endeavours for the speedy bringing in the Arrears of the Scotts Monies in that County; and give a speedy Account of his Service therein, within Ten Days at furthest: And that he do resort to the Committee at Goldsmiths-Hall, to receive the best Directions he can for this Service.

Ordered, That Captain Skynner do write Letters into Kent, for the speedy Collecting and Bringing in of the Arrears of the Scotts Monies: And that he require a speedy Account to be given hereof to the House.

Sir Wm. Masham and Sir Martin Lumley are to write the like Letters into the County of Essex.

Mr. Heveningham and Sir Nathanael Barnardiston are to write the like Letters into the County of Suffolk:

Sir Dudly North into the County of Cambridge:
Colonel Walton into Huntingtonshire:
Sir John Potts into the County of Norfolke.

Resolved, &c. That Eleven thousand Yards of BroadCloth be forthwith provided, upon Account, for supplying the Wants of the Cloth formerly furnished, and speedily sent down, towards the Cloathing of the Soldiers of the Army under the Command of the Earl of Leaven.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee at Goldsmiths-Hall, to provide and furnish these Cloths, accordingly.

Resolved, &c. That One thousand Backs, Breasts, and Pots, and Thousand Pair of Pistols, be forthwith provided and furnished, towards the Arming of the Scotts Army under the Command of the Earl of Leven: And that it be referred to the Committee at Goldsmiths-Hall, to provide and furnish these Arms, accordingly.

The Hundred thousand Pounds for the Earl of Calender's Army is ready.

Ordered, That the Members of this House do give a speedy Account of the Letters to be written into Scotland, concerning the Advance of the Scots Army Southward, formerly referred to the Committee of both Kingdoms to prepare and write to them.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee of both Kingdoms, to take care for Provision of Arms, Ammunition, Victual, Magazines, and other necessary Accommodations, to enable the Scotts Army to be useful in the Publick Service, in pursuance of a Desire of the Scotts Commissioners, in a Paper of the Date of Januar' 20, 1644.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee of both Kingdoms, to consider of inlarging the Quarters of the Scottish Army Southward, that they may be the better enabled for Service; their present Quarters being very streight, and the Counties, where they now are, much impoverished.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee of both Kingdoms, to consider what Number of Soldiers is fit to be kept for the Security of the Town of Portesmouth; and to consider of an Establishment, accordingly; and of some Propositions to be offered to the House, for the constant Pay and Maintaining thereof.

A Message from the Lords, by Sir Edward Leech and Mr. Page;

The Lords have commanded us to return unto you this Ordinance, which was sent from hence: It is for the Raiseing and Maintaining of Forces for the Defence of the Kingdom, under the Command of Sir Thomas Fairfax: The which they have passed, with some Provisoes and Amendments; and refer them to the Consideration of this House.

The Amendments were read; and ordered to be taken into Consideration, the first Business, To-morrow Morning.

Answer returned by the same Messengers; That this House has considered their Lordships Message; and will send Answer speedily by Messengers of their own.

The House being informed, That there were divers of the Assembly at the Door;

They were called in: And Doctor Burgesse presented to the House, What they had further finished concerning the Directory for Church-Government; videlicet,
