Aug. 23. Warrant from same to Edward Seymour, Treasurer of the Navy. Richard Kent, Esq., has lent to the King 10,000l. which by agreement is to be repaid by the sale of a certain parcel of tin belonging to the King so soon as same shall be brought to London and sold. Meanwhile he is to have tallies deposited in his hands for his security. You are to deposit with him tallies on the Customs to that amount struck for the service of the Navy, until said tin shall be brought and put into the hands of Sir William Hooker, Kt., one of the aldermen of London, when said tallies are to be re-delivered to you or you shall otherwise be discharged thereof. Warrant from Treasurer Danby to Sir Josoph Seymour, Auditor for cos. Lanes., Westmorland and Cumberland, to take convenient course for the collecting and receiving the Crown revenues in said counties, the Receiver General thereof, James Lancashire, being lately dead, and no other Receiver yet constituted. Warrants not Relating to Money VII. p. 107.
Same from same to tho King's Remembrancer for process of extent and all other usual process against the estate of the abovesaid James Lancashire, lately deceased, he not having cleared his account of his receipts, but remaining in debt to the King. Ibid, p. 109.
Same from same to same to stay process against Richard Gwynne on his bonds as one of the sureties for John Vaughan, Esq., late Receiver General of Hearthmoney and the Eighteen Months' tax for South Wales and Monmouth : said Receiver having suffered losses by returns of money to the value of above 2,500l. and being indebted to the King 4,700l. upon both the said accompts ; and the rest of his sureties having settled their estate so that the King's extent cannot touch them, thus leaving only said Gwynne's estate under extent to the value of above 2,000l. ; said Gwynne having in his petition to Treasurer Danby proposed to lay down said estate and a debt of 4,200l. duo to him from several bankers, to satisfy the King's debt. Same from same to same to supersede process of extent against the person and estate of Thomas Goddard who is indebted 1,400l. to the King for an arrear of Hearthmoney in co. Suffolk, he having petitioned the King for an allowance of law charges expended in the said receipt, which petition is now under Treasurer Danby's consideration. Ibid.
Same from same to the Surveyor General of Crown Lands for a particular and ratal of the farm of the Original Seal and Pre fines in the counties of Carnarvon, Anglesey and Merioneth in North Wales, in order to a new grant thereof to Eubale Thelwall and Mathew Price for 14 years after the expiry of the present grant thereof, all as desired by Sarah White, widow, who prays a further lease to them of the premises for 21 years after the 17 years in being and at the present rent of 9l. per an. If any party be grieved that excessive fines are imposed power is to be granted for their appeal to the Lord Treasurer or Chancellor of the Exchequer to moderate the same, and such judgment to be final. Same from same to Richard Lightfoot, Auditor for co. Kent, for a particular of all the rents and profits of the manor of Gillingham and Grain and of the bailiwick thereof, with a view to a grant of the office of bailiff thereof to Edward Burden, loco Robert Burden, lately deceased. Ibid.
Same from same to Richard Kent [Cashier of the Customs] to receive from Phillip Marsh wine bonds to the value of 3,000l. and to deliver same to Charles Bertie in discharge of tallies to that amount on the Customs : being for secret service. Money Book (General) p. 128.

Charles Bertie to the Auditor of the Receipt to pay to him (Bertie) for secret service the 500l. which the Customs Cashier will bring in. Out Letters (General) p. 146.
Warrant from Treasurer Danby to the Customs Commissioners, dated from Wallingford House, on payment of 50l. as follows, to set at liberty the person of William Benson, late collector of Truro who was prosecuted and imprisoned for an arrear of 360l. 0s. 9d. on his collection, whereof 89l. 8s. 4d. is since paid by him and 47l. is in a fair way of recovery, and his wife's friends have offered 50l. more for his liberty. Treasurer Danby's subscription of a docquet dated 1676-7, Feb., of a grant to Robert Nott, of the office of his Majesty's Skinner or Serjeant Skinner, with the foe of 2s. a day, and all other fees and profits thereto : during pleasure. Docquet Book, p. 160.
Aug. 25. Royal warrant to the Attorney or Solicitor General for a great seal for a grant to Henry Ball, gent, of the offices of Collector of Customs, Newcastle port, upon surrender of John Holman, present officer there by patent granted 24 Car. Same to same for a same for a grant to Francis Reynolds, Esq., and Francis, his son, of the yearly annuity or pension of 200l for life to them or the longer liver of them : to be payable quarterly commencing the first payment from June 24 last, "the same to be in consideration of the good and acceptable service performed by the said Francis Reynolds towards our happy preservation after Worcester fight." Warrant from Treasurer Danby to the Customs Commissioners to permit the unlading, unopened and Customs free, from the ship Prosper, William Daniell master, into any other vessel to be transported to Poland, of 10 bales of wearing apparel and other things belonging to the King of Poland (and attended by Peter Starkenberg, one of said King's servants) : said goods being lately brought from France in said ship. Out Letters (Customs) III. p. 347.
Same from same to same to permit the shipment for Holland, Custom free, of goods as follow, which as appears from the petition of Christian van Breda, of London, merchant, were brought from Jerusalem and Turkey by his correspondent there, one Martino de Moyere, who had been travelling there and consigned same from Leghorn in the ship Industry, Capt. Nath. Grantham commander, to petitioner to forward same to Amsterdam, which transhipment at London cannot be done without Treasurer Danby's permission, as some of said goods are prohibited.
Appending : Schedule of said goods : books, writings, letters, silver girdles, buttons, rings, Turkish knives, medals, a little silver case with two pictures, a ditto with a rittratto, one band point do Marie, two pipes, etc., etc.

Aug. 28. Same to the Navy Commissioners to forthwith make a bill of imprest to the Victuallers of the Navy for 2,500l. assigned to them. Ibid, p. 147.
Aug. 29. Warrant from Treasurer Danby to the Excise Commissioners to separate and keep apart (in accordance with the late Act for an Additional Excise for three years) from the rest of the moneys of Excise received since June 24 last, a full fifth part of the whole receipt as it shall become due from and shall be paid in by the Excise Farmers ; and to pay all such moneys so received and set apart into the Exchequer. [?] [Entry of Treasurer Danby's subscription of a] docquet of a reversionary lease to John Powney, gent., of certain lands called Mustians Farm, co. Bucks, parcel of the manor of Eton ; for 31 years in consideration of his release of the Tenths of Windsor Great Park and Mote Park. Ibid.
Aug. 29. Sir John Cope having a clause in his patent that no building shall be made under the wings of the Custom House, London port, without his leave, and being informed that the Customs Commissioners are desirous to build offices there for the tidesurveyors, desires that Treasurer Danby will not give order for such offices to be built till Sir John have notice, and be heard [thereupon]. Royal sign manual to Charles Bertie "and to all such other person and persons to whom the moneys for our secret service are or shall be usually issued," to pay yearly out of such secret service moneys 200l. to Thomas Holland as royal bounty ; paying same quarterly, commencing the first payment from Lady day last and continuing same during the life of Sir John Holland, father of said Thomas. Treasurer Danby to the Customs Commissioners to observe an order of the King in Council of the 24th July last requiring that no goods be permitted to be shipped to Tangier until same be duly entered and Customs thereon paid according to the Book of Rates : it having been represented that under pretence of liberty given for transporting materials to Tangier for the King's mole there a private trade is carried on to the prejudice of the Customs.

Warrant from same to same to deliver and pass, Customs free inwards and outwards, certain stuffs, wearing apparel, etc., lately brought from France, being sent by the Swedish minister at Paris to the Earl de la Gardie and his lady in England with a little sealed box directed to Mr. Nicholas Preuss, one of the King of Sweden's Commissaries at Gothenburg, the contents supposed to be letters to that King or some small tokens and another box with musmillion seeds : all as appears from the information of Monsieur Leyonbergh, the Swedish Resident. Same from same to same to deliver, Customs free, goods as in a schedule annexed [missing] (except the two bales of books for which you are to have other direction, and the Rhenish wine, which is to pay duty) containing the equipage of Monsieur de Barillon, ambassador extraordinary from France, same having been shipped from France in the Providence, Thomas Martin master, and being expected shortly. Same from same to Sir John Shaw, Collector Inwards London port, to swear John Skipwith into office as a patent waiter London port, as deputy to Francis Dackett, one of the King's waiters there. Ibid, pp. 349-50.
Letter of direction on an order of the 4th inst, for 13,858l. 5s. 11d. to Samuel Papys, which makes up 14,300l. for a quarter ending June 30 last on the establishment of 57,200l. per an. for Tangier : same to be hereby satisfied by tallies on the Hearthmoney Contractors' payment due in March next. Money warrant for 75l. to Madam Frances Civet for one quarter on her pension of 300l. per an.
Memorandum : "This pays her to Midsummer, 1677, for my Lord's time [as Lord Treasurer]." (The usual letters dated Sept. 3 to the Customs and Exchequer : to be paid in immediately after the weekly payments.)

Warrant from Treasurer Danby to the Receipt to pay 40l. to the executors of John Brewster for one year to 1676, Sept. 29, on his fee as Comptroller of the Great Roll of the Pipe. (Charles Bertie dated Aug. 16 [sic] to the [Auditor of the Receipt] to pay to Mris. Brewster said 40l. which the Customs Cashier will bring in.) Money Book (General) p. 129. Money warrant dormant for the yearly fee of 20l. to each of the seven Auditors of the Exchequer ; what is grown due thereon to June 24 last and as same shall grow due in future. Money Book (General) p. 129.
Warrant from Treasurer Danby to Richard Kent, Cashier of the Customs, to receive from Phillip Marsh wine bonds to the value of 3,000l. ("and if there shall not be so many in his hands that then you take and receive of Mr. Mich. Weikes" tobacco bonds to make up that sum) and to deliver same to Charles Bertie in satisfaction of tallies on the Customs to that amount : being for secret service. Money Book (General) p. 129.
Money warrant for 100l. to Sir Phillip Lloyd for last June 24 quarter as clerk of the Privy Council attending the Lords Committees of Council for Trade and Plantations, 37l. 10s. 0d. to William Blathwaite for same time as assistant to said clerk, and 179l. 2s. 3d. for two clerks and incidents of said Council for same time.
Appending : account of said salaries and incidents as allowed July 17 last by nine Lords of the Council detailed (including items for the purchase of 'Price Current,' and 'City Mercury' and several pamphlets of history and trade).

Privy seal for an annuity or yearly pension of 500l. to Edward Griffin, Esq. : during pleasure : to be payable half yearly commencing the first payment from Lady day last : to be without account. Same for allowing 6 per cent. per an, interest (to be payable half yearly) to Richard Brett for the 2,000l. owing to him from the King and for which he has an order registered on the Hearthmoney (said order having been drawn 1668, Aug. 29, for 2,000l. to Sir James Thynne, Kt., in repayment of so much which he had paid for the late King, which order was assigned 1671, Dec. 14, to said Richard Brett) viz., for the period said principal sum has been already due and until same shall be paid and discharged (it appearing by acquittances endorsed upon the said order that Brett has been paid 3 years' interest thereon).
