July 12 Warrant from Treasurer Danby to John Ramsey, serjeant at arms, to arrest Nathaniell Langley, who, with Mary his wife and one Margaret Slaymaker and others, very much beat and abused John Hurst, Hearthmoney collector, when executing his duty in Stepney, co. Middlesex, and John Munday, headborough of said parish, whom said Hurst called to his assistance. Ibid, p. 117.
Same from same to the King's Remembrancer to forbear issue of process against Edward Cornwall and Herbert Aubrey, Esqrs., sureties for John Davis, of Hereford, late Receiver of Hearthmoney, co. [?] Charles Bertie to [the Navy Commissioners]. Treasurer Danby has ordered to the Victuallers of the Navy five weeks of their established allowance, amounting to 2,388l. 17s. 6d., out of the Customs. You are to make out imprest bills to them for that sum. The other five weeks due to them to-day is to be paid out of the three weeks' [Navy] money, to be [by the Lord Treasurer] made good to you to pay up the Navy to June 24 last. July 12 Charles Bertie to the Auditor of the Receipt to pay 200l. due upon an order for 200l. to Sir William Turner for law suits, "there being several trials to be had this summer Assizes which for want of money cannot be carried on." Money Book (General), p. 169.
Warrant from Treasurer Danby to the Customs Cashier to pay 156l. to Edward Agberow for three years of his fee as Pricker, of the Stilyard. Ibid.
July 14 Royal warrant to the Attorney or Solicitor General for a great seal for a grant to Arthur Fleetwood of the manor of Hampton-in-Arden, co. Warwick, with all its rights, members and appurtenances, lands, tithes, tenements, rents, liberties, &c., Courts leet and other Courts. &c. (except advowsons and royal mines), to hold (for such parts as are now in lease to him from the Queen Consort) for 31 years from the end of his term therein and as to the remainder for the remainder of said term of 31 years remaining after the Queen's death : at the yearly rent of 5l. (Treasurer Danby's subscription, dated July 22, of docquet hereof. The docquet reads for a grant to Andrew Taylor, gent., and his assigns at the nomination of Arthur Fleetwood.) Royal sign manual for 150l. to Thomas, Lord Colepeper, as royal bounty. (Money warrant, dated July 16, hereon.) Same to same for a great seal for a grant to Henry Guy, one of the Grooms of the King's Bedchamber, of the annuity or yearly pension of 500l. : to commence from June 24 last. Warrant under the royal sign manual and signet to the Auditors of Imprests that the officers as follow shall have allowance of the fees, or increase thereof, as set down in the orders established and signed by the King relating to the Office of Works and dated 1662-3, Feb. 4, in as ample manner as any of their predecessors : the said salaries and fees being in the said order set down with this limitation that same should continue to the officers then being but not to their successors without further warrant : viz as follows : Surveyor of Works (Sir Christopher Wren), Comptroller of Works (Hugh May), Paymaster of Works (Philip Packer), Carpenter of Works (Richard Ryder). July 15 Warrant from Treasurer Danby to the Receipt to pay 305l. to Sir Edward Griffin on any orders in his name for the service of the Treasury of the Chamber : to be by him paid over to the assigns of Sir John Ayton : to be paid by tallies on the Receiver of Tenths of the diocese of Lincoln. July 16 Warrant from Treasurer Danby to Robert Culliford, Adam de Cardonell and Mr. Rought, officers of Southampton port. By Act of Parliament as well as by special grant contained in the charter and privileges of the inhabitants of Guernsey, they have liberty to transport yearly. Customs free, out of England certain quantities of combed and uncombed wool and other commodities for the service of the said island, It appears by certificate of said Cardonell, Customer of Southampton, that there remains unshipped from Southampton port for several merchants, inhabitants of Guernsey, upon the allowance for the years 1671-2-3, 679¼ todds of wool. You are to permit the transport of this quantity. Customs free, from Southampton over and above the quantity allowed for the current year on the delivery of such writing under the seal of the Governor of Guernsey as is required by the Act of 12 Car. Treasurer Danby to Lord Lovelace and the Earl of Rochester. There has been a considerable waste of wood in the parks of Woodstock by under officers and others. Enquire hereof and give me the names and particular miscarriages of the criminals and prohibit all cutting of wood there without written order. Ibid.
Warrant from same to the Customs Commissioners to deliver to Jervas Pierepoint some pictures which he used "aboard" [abroad], and now brings home as part of his household goods. Ibid, p. 121.
Treasurer Danby to the Judges of Assize for the Northern Circuit concerning popular opposition to the Excise, ut supra, p. 781-2, and particularly that in co. Norfolk two Justices before whom an information was brought against a brewer for erecting and using two private and concealed Goyle Tunns and a private storehouse without notice given to the Excise officers, have mitigated the penalties thereon from 150l. to 20s., whereby offenders in the like are encouraged and the Excise statutes wholly eluded. This has been referred to me from the Privy Council and I desire you in your charge at the several Assizes, and especially in Norfolk to take special notice of these miscarriages and to charge the Grand Juries to enquire of all riotous and unlawful assemblies and to intimate to the Justices of Peace in the several counties that although His Majesty will for the present pass by the miscarriage of the said two Justices he will expect for the future the laws to be effectually executed. Warrant from Treasurer Danby to the Customs Commissioners (by virtue of the order in Council of the 14th inst.) to deliver, customs free, to Mris Anne Chaumont, servant to the Countess Penalva, two pieces of lace lately seized out of the mail by John Fox, deputy searcher at Dover. Charles Bertie to the Auditor of the Receipt to pay (out of the 5,000l. which the Customs Cashier is to bring into the Exchequer this morning) 1,000l. to Major Watson for the Stables, 100l. to Mr. Courtney and 600l. to the Privy Purse for one week. "And for the future you are desired to make constant payment to the Privy Purse out of any money remaining in your hands ; and to send a list of such letters as have been directed for payments and [are yet] not observed." July 16 Money warrant for 905l. to Sir Edward Wood, Kt., Envoy Extraordinary to the King of Sweden, for six months' ordinary at 5l. a day from Jan. 7 last to the 7th inst. Ibid.
[? after July 17] Incomplete letter from [Charles Bertie] to the Customs Cashier. I am now capacitated to return an answer to yours of the 17th inst. You are forthwith to pay into the Exchequer 2,000l. [Struck through : doubtless by reason of being entered in the wrong book. July 19 Warrant from Treasurer Danby to the Customs Cashier. By my warrant of the 16th inst. tallies are ordered to be levied on you for 10,000l. for Sir Phillip Lloyd for His Majesty's secret service [to be satisfied] by bonds taken at the Custom House to June 14 last as in a schedule hereto [missing]. You are hereby to receive such bonds from the officer who has the custody thereof and to deliver same to said Lloyd with any moneys that may have been received on any of them before such delivery, together also with the computed discount on such bills. Derby and Surrey, to the value of 153l. 3s. 5½d., per an. for the purchase of which he has contracted with the Trustees for sale of Fee Farms : as royal bounty, "we having on several occasions had experience of the fidelity of the said Henry Savile in our service."
