Greenwich, shewing the great charges he has been at in being sworn

the officers of the Works forewarned the tenants paying any more
rent to him, upon which he laid his case before the Commissioners
for said Hospital who consented that he should hold the said rents till
further order and Sir Christopher Wrenn sent one Mr. Strickland to
go with petitioner and take off the stop, which was done accordingly :
but soon after, in Michaelmas last Mr. Strickland, with one Mr.
Watson ordered the tenants to pay no more rent and threatens
proceedings for the rents from the date of the said grant [to the
Hospital], which was in 1701, which petitioner thinks a great hardship,
he having served the Crown ever since the Restoration and never
had any salary for the said place nor any place or pension from her

George Freke and Col. — Brudenall between them for their services
as Majors of Brigade (one of Horse and one of Foot) during the
incampments which have been had during the last 2 years for the
better discipline of the Troops in Ireland : the usual allowance being
10s. a day each but there being no fund for paying the same. Out

Dublin to remove the Queen's dog kennel [near the wall of Phœnix
Park] and to build one in a more convenient place at their own
expense ; they with several of the inhabitants on Arbour Hill lying
near the wall of the said Park (which is the resort of several people
for their health) being much annoyed with the great stench from
the said kennel which adjoins to their habitations.
Further, a lease is hereby to be granted to the said Tenison and
Proby of the said ground together with a craggy piece of ground
where the Queen's Ice House is (which being divided from the rest
of the said Park is in a manner wholly useless) under a rental of
3l. per an. and with a covenant for them to provide ice ("to keep

here as Jacques Pryor ; John Narbone appears as John Naibone ;
William Vernall appears as William Veron ; John Tawney appears
as John Tauncy and as John Taurncy. The payment under the
royal warrant of 1705 May 21 supra p. 262 was for a first moiety of
the total arrears of 2409l 18s. 0d. The payment of the second
moiety was ordered by the royal warrant of 19 Feb. 1705-6 supra
p. 581 and took the form of an issue of 1204l. 19s. 0d. to John Howe

Prefixing : report by the Comptrollers of Army Accounts. The said
Moody was left with the command of Newfoundland in Sept. 1704 and
he and the soldiers were cleared to the 22nd of that month. They
continued there till Nov. last but have not obtained their subsistence
or pay from the said 22 Sept. 1704. The full pay (subsistence, offreckonings
and clearings) of the Company has been issued to 24 Dec.
1704 ; that for the year to 1705 Dec. 24 amounting to 961l. 12s. 6d.
was ordered by warrant of ditto 1705 June 31 : whereof the sum of
355l. 5s. 7½d. has been paid to Capt. Powell's executors and Capt.
Lloyd for money expended by them before 1704 Sept. 22 for the
Company, and Mr. Thornton the agent has received a further sum of
363l. 4s. 7½d. : the balance being 243l. 2s. 3d. is stopped in the Pay
Office for respits. The petitioner Moody has produced a certificate
of the daily delivery to the soldiers, during the siege, of wine and
brandy for 5 weeks during the extremity of the weather and claims
176l. for same. Considering the nature of the service we think he

cases to allow the like benefit to Captains who have no commission
or letters of mart as if they had letters of mart, that is the benefit
of having the prize delivered to them they paying the charges [of
condemnation] and the Lord Admiral's Tenths on the appraisement
when the prize arrives in England. The said prize has been valued
at 1448l. 17s. 6d. I conceive it more reasonable to make the said
allowances in this case than in many of those where letters of mart

Regiment of Pierce, Visct. Ikerrin on the Establishment of Ireland

Warrant by Treasurer Godolphin to the Surveyor General of
Crown Lands for a particular of the custody of the Hundreds [of
Ock and Moreton, co. Berks.] and the office of steward and bailiff of
[said Hundreds], part of the late Queen Dowager's jointure, in order
to a fresh lease thereof to Sir John Stonehouse bart. ut supra p. 560.
Prefixing : said Surveyor General's report on said Stonehouse's
petition. "The records etc. of her late Majesty's jointure being not
yet delivered over to me I was forced to send to her Majesty's auditor
who informs me" that the custody of said Hundreds was granted
in 1682 for 31 years at 10l. 10s. 0d. per an. rent and they were inserted
at that value in the said Queen's jointure deed. The premises are

Same to same for a same of several closes of land called Cox
Leasowes, Court Berrys, Lords Mead, Buttes Bushes, Buttes Lawn
and the Church Close situate in Lindhurst in New Forest and several
parcels of the Old Park of Lindhurst in order to a new lease thereof
to Sir John St. Barbe bart.
Prefixing : Surveyor General's report on said St. Barbe's petition.
The premises were leased to Matthew Bennett for 31 years and this
petitioner as assignee of the lease has several times cut down trees
and underwood for repairs, fuel and other boots and alleged he had
power to do so, whereupon Mr. Wilcox, Surveyor General of Woods
obtained the Attorney General's opinion that an action lay against
the lessee [and] "on sight thereof he desisted." Mr. Wilcox is of
opinion that a reasonable allowance of boots by assignment of
dotard and decayed trees within the forest, as my Lord Warden's
tenants have, may be a means to preserve the young thriving trees,
of which there is a great quantity on the premises but no other

in the Exchequer : as in part of 352,000l. for Guards and Garrisons
anno 1703 ; whereof 1000l. is for the Earl of Donegal's Regiment
and 1000l. for Visct. Charlemont's Regiment as compromise in lieu
of pay and all other their demands whatever (excepting offreckonings
for clothes and poundage and days' pay) at any time before 1703

J. Taylour (in the absence of William Lowndes) to James Brydges,
Paymaster of the Forces Abroad. On Feb. 7 last 107,708l. 14s. 9d.
was issued to you on loans to be made by yourself on the ninth 4s.
Aid for which loans the interest was to commence "from the day
of making the same" because it was then understood that Sir Henry
Furnese would accept the whole sum [as in payment] for the [like]
value in bills which he was to give you for the service of the Forces
[abroad]. But the Lord Treasurer is since informed that Sir Henry
refused taking part of "the said tallies." Please send an account
what tallies he took and what remain in your hands so that the
interest on the latter may be stopped till such time as they be accepted
or money raised on them. Ibid.

Paymaster General of the Forces Abroad : in part of 222,379l.
5s. 10d. for the 10,210 men in Portugal anno 1706 : to be
issued out of loans to be made by said Brydges on Malt anno 1706 :
the orders for which loans are to be reserved in his hands for the said
Forces. (J. Taylour to said Brydges to assign said sum to Sir Henry
Furnese at 4½ per cent. interest to answer the bills which said Furnese
has given for the service of said men in Portugal : to wit, for 31

Treasury reference to the Customs Commissioners of the petition
of William Browne of London, merchant, for allowance of the drawback
on tobacco shipped by one Thomas Walsh on the Montague,
Capt. Cleeland, Commander, the drawback being refused by reason
the tobacco was put on board one of her Majesty's ships of war for
exportation, it being the opinion of several Counsel that he is
notwithstanding entitled to the same. Reference Book VIII,
