Present : Lord Treasurer [Lord Godolphin], Chancellor of the
Exchequer [Henry Boyle].
Sir Henry Furnese is called in. My Lord tells him there will be
occasion of 6000l. to be remitted to Portugal to-morrow night to
answer credits which have or may be given there for the support of
Gibraltar, and that if he will give his bills for that sum it shall be
[re]paid him out of the Civil List money by 1000l. a week.
Sir Henry agrees to do it. My Lord orders (if there be no warrant
or order already [drawn] proper to make the said issue upon) that a
sign manual be prepared for any sum not exceeding 10,000l. for this
service, in regard there may be further occasion.
Sir Henry prays payment of 12,500l. which he advanced about a
month ago towards paying [subsidy] arrears due to the King of
Denmark and proposes to take 8000l. out of prize money and the
rest out of loans to be made by [Furnese] himself on the Malt anno
1704. My Lord [tells Sir Henry that he] will take care that the same
shall be satisfied as soon as possible.
[Order for] 100l. to Col. Phil. Howard : out of secret service money.
[My Lord orders] the papers for the Queen to be abstracted.
Sir Henry Furnese offers to take tallies on the Land Tax anno
1705 for the remittances he is obliged to make, as often as ready money
shall be directed for the same, for an allowance (after the rate of 5 per
cent. if the tallies are struck within ..., struck through being itself
written over an erasure which runs to the end of the present minute)
of a month's interest after the rate of 5 per cent. over and above the
running interest of 5 per cent. per an. to be assigned [to] him on the
orders [of repayment], from the days only on which he gives his bills.

memorials on several occasions that he is commanded by his Royal
Highness [the Lord Admiral] to lay the particulars therein specified
before my Lord Treasurer, my Lord is of opinion that where his
Highness's pleasure is necessary to be signified to his Lordship in
any matter relating to the Marine Regiments it should most properly
be signified by his Highness's secretary.
A memorial of Charles Fox [Paymaster of the Forces Abroad]
dated March 30 last is read [and my Lord Treasurer thereupon]
ordered that a sum of 34,601l. 8s. 8½d. be issued to him upon the
proper orders in that behalf : out of loans to be made by [Fox]
himself on the Land Tax anno 1705 : and to be applied to the
following uses mentioned in his memorial :

Mr. St. John [Secretary at War] desires that the levy money for
the six new Regiments may be issued, in regard the commissions are
[in the process of] making out and the orders [are] preparing for
raising them. [My Lord Treasurer replies that] a memorial must
be presented in form and he will then direct the money.
Ordered that bills [of exchange] be sent by this night's post for a
quarter of the 200,000 Crowns payable by her Majesty to the King
of Prussia towards maintaining 8000 men sent to the succour of the
Duke of Savoy : [and is] for one year : and as soon as the privy seal
for that purpose is passed my Lord will issue the value out of loans to
be made on the Land Tax anno 1705.

Mr. Fox [Paymaster of the Forces Abroad] is called in. His
memorial is read for levy money for 6 new Regiments of Foot to
serve at sea, amounting to 10,872l. My Lord ordered 5000l. in part
thereof : out of loans on Low Wines anno 1705.
Order for 125l. to be issued to Visct. FitzHardinge : out of the late
King's arrears [of Civil List revenue] : and is to satisfy what is due to
said Viscount at the Exchequer on his salary to Xmas 1701 as Keeper
of the Mall.
[My Lord ordered] 12,000l. to be issued to Mr. Fox on the proper
[or relative] order : out of loans to be made by himself on the Land
Tax anno 1705 : and is to satisfy one fourth part of her Majesty's
proportion of 300,000 Crowns to the King of Prussia pursuant to the
late Treaty [of 28 Nov. 1704, see C.J. XIV, pp. 501-2].
Mr. Brewer, Receiver General of Prizes, is called in. My Lord
Treasurer acquaints him that twill be a service to the public if he
can immediately pay into the Exchequer 8000l. on account of the
Queen's share of prizes and if he has not so much in his hands at
present my Lord will take care that if he shall want any part thereof
before he receive so much prize money as will make it good, the same
shall upon signification from Mr. Brewer be immediately supplied
him out of the Civil List money.
[My Lord orders] 10l. to Barbara Curtis : out of Secret Service
money : as royal bounty in consideration of the loss of a cable and
other tackle belonging to a vessel of hers at Seaford taken away by
the French.

likewise 1036l. 9s. 10¾d. to the Treasurer of the Chamber for a
quarter's wages to the servants abovestairs [sic for below stairs]
who are appointed to attend her Majesty to Newmarket [viz. for the

[My Lord signs a] letter [of direction] to issue 8000l. to Mr. Fox
[Paymaster of the Forces Abroad] out of the Queen's share of prizes,
on the order in his name for 25,000l. for arrears of subsidy to the
King of Denmark due before Xmas 1704.
[likewise a like] letter for 12,000l. to said Fox out of loans to be
made by Fox himself on the Land Tax anno 1705 : towards satisfying
her Majesty's quota of 300,000 Crowns agreed to be paid to the King
of Prussia for one year for 8000 men sent to the succour of the Duke of
Savoy. This is to be issued on an order for 50,000l. for this purpose.
[likewise a like] letter for 6000l. to said Fox on an order in his
name for 10,000l. for extraordinary charges and disbursements
relating to the defence of Gibraltar : to be issued out of Civil List
funds by 1000l. this day and 1000l. a week in the 5 subsequent weeks.
[likewise a like] letter for 5000l. to said Fox out of loans in the
Exchequer on Low Wines &c. anno 1705 : and is in part of a memorial
for 10,872l. for levy money for 6 new Regiments at the rate of 3l.

Sir Thomas Littleton [Treasurer of the Navy] presents a letter from
the Navy Commissioners desiring 50,000l. for carrying on the payments
of wages at the Nore and Spithead. My Lord ordered that
Sir Thomas do take up [borrow] 48,000l. at an interest of 5 per cent.
per an. on the Land Tax tallies in his hands anno 1705 ; the said
interest to commence from the time he receives the money [from the
lenders] and my Lord will endorse the orders [to make them bear
interest] accordingly : which said sum of 48,000l. is to be applied to

Present : Lord Treasurer, Chancellor of the Exchequer.
My Lord Treasurer hath received the Queen's pleasure that the
pay of the Earl of Peterborough as Captain General of the Land
Forces to serve on board the Fleet, or so much as the said pay shall
amount unto, shall be continued and paid unto him or those claiming
under him until Xmas 1705 although he should [happen to] sooner
die in her Majesty's service. Write to Mr. St. John [Secretary at
War] to prepare a warrant accordingly.
[My Lord ordered] 5872l. to Mr. Fox : out of Low Wines : to
complete 10,872l. for levy money for 6 Regiments of Foot [to be raised]
in lieu of those which are to serve on board the Fleet : as per
Mr. Pauncefoot's memorial of this day.
Prepare orders for issuing to the Navy and the Forces the contribution
money for purchasing all the Reversionary Annuities not
purchased already [under the Act 3-4 Anne c. 2]. Ibid., p. 78.

The officers of the Exchequer are to be here then about Presgrave's

[My Lord orders] 50,000l. [to the Treasurer of the Navy] out of
loans in the Exchequer : and is in further part of 3 months for the
Victualling.
Mr. Fox is [to be desired] to raise money at 6 per cent. interest
[wherever he can] on the tallies for 75,500l. on the Low Wine Act
[3-4 Anne c. 18] and on the 50,000l. tallies on the Two Thirds Subsidy
[3-4 Anne c. 3].
