Jan. 31. Royal warrant to the Clerk of the Signet for a privy seal for the yearly sum of 4,000l. as follows to the Duke of Schonburg, late Master General of the Ordnance and Capt. General of the Land Forces, deceased. In consideration of his great services “in the hazardous attempts which we had made into this kingdom for redeeming the same from popery and arbitrary power,” and of his great losses by the confiscation of his lands and possessions in France and the destruction of his castles, lands etc. in the Palatinate of the Rhine, the King did resolve to confer 100,000l. upon him to be laid out in the purchase of lands for him for life and after him for Charles his third son (since Duke of Schonberg and deceased) and his heirs male; and failing him then to Maynard, second son of said Frederick, then called Lord Maynard and now Duke of Schonberg and Leinster and his heirs male and failing him then to the right heirs of said Duke Frederick for ever: and the King signed a warrant for a great seal for the said purposes, but the same passed not by reason of Duke Frederick's departure for Ireland and his death at the Boyne, and because the necessity of our affairs would not permit the speedy payment of so considerable a sum. The King is therefore hereby pleased to allow 4,000l. a year to the said Charles, late Duke of Schonberg, as interest of the said 100,000l. and the said yearly sum has been paid to 1692, Dec. 31: since which time the said Duke Charles has been slain in our service in the battle of Morsaglia in Piedmont, and the King is resolved that said Maynard, now Duke shall have said allowance as from 1692, Dec. 31, to continue until said 100,000l. be paid him, which the King is resolved to pay “as soon as the condition of our affairs will admit thereof.” It is hereby to be paid out of the revenue of the Post Office. Royal warrant to the Lords Justices, Ireland, for a patent to pass the great seal of Ireland for a grant to Henry, Earl of Drogheda, of the house called the Blew Boares Head in Deer Street in Drogheda opposite to the Quay of Drogheda on the other side of the river, wherein Ignatius Pippard lately dwelled and the 16 acres of land lying near the bog of Beamore in the Liberties of the said town of Drogheda: on the said Earl giving bond in 800l. not to execute the statute staple against said Pippard unless he, the said Earl, be evicted from the premises: all by reason that on 29 Jan., 1678–9, the said Earl by the name of Henry Hamilton, alias Moore, of Tully, co. Kildare, esq., lent 300l. to Ignatius Pippard of Drogheda, merchant, and Christopher Pippard of the same, his son, on which they paid the interest till 1686, but being Roman Catholics and that party then in great power in Ireland, neglected afterwards the paying any interest and the said Ignatius is now dead and the said Christopher, a merchant, has in the troublesome times removed all his effects into France, where he now remains in open rebellion against the King of England, and both he and his father are outlawed for treason; whereupon said Earl possessed himself of the above premises and of two other small tenements in the Bull Ring in Drogheda, inhabited by Gregory Ward and—Byrne, a baker: all which facts are confirmed by the report of Sir Richard Levinge, Solicitor General of Ireland.
