March 6. Senato, Secreta. Dispacci, Francia. Venetian Achives. |
281. Marc Antonio Giustinian, Venetian Ambassador in France, to the Doge and Senate. The mediating princes have begun their operations for peace. Signor Treveri, the gentleman sent by his Britannic Majesty, (fn. 1) has arrived at the Court and has seen the king here who made a somewhat bitter reference in speaking with him, charging him with the ingratitude of his king in having entered upon alliances to prevent him from having what justly belonged to him. This Treveri is a man of ability equal to any transaction. He behaved with tact but none the less he was ill pleased about it. Paris, the 6th March, 1668. [Italian.] |

282. Catterin Belegno, Venetian Ambassador in Spain, to the Doge and Senate. The alliance established between his Britannic Majesty and the States of Holland is constantly being disclosed as more and more directed to the injury of this crown. They say here that the articles have been set out at length by the Sieur di Liona and sent to Holland. Moreover it seems a sheer impossibility that the party of France should constantly be strengthening itself in the empire or that the princes of the North should not know how far it is going with its ambitions and be exposed by its measures (non conoschino dove arriva con li fini et si dilati con le sue misure). Madrid, the 7th March, 1668. [Italian.] |
