Hesdin to Margaret Of Savoy.
Madame : To-day the king of England and the cardinal sent one of their couriers to the king of Spain. Their message, substantially that which I wrote you, offers to send ships with sufficient crews to conduct Charles in safety wherever he wishes to go. Moreover, since he judges that Charles must have been put to great expense in the matter of the imperial election, this king offers to lend him whatever money he needs at present and says further that whatever course his majesty takes he (Henry) is with him for good or ill, and will come to his aid in person, and to the limit of his resources in goods and substance.
I can promise you, madame, that, if his majesty comes here, it will not need much asking to induce this king to follow him wherever honour and profit lead. Henry has recently decided to send a great embassy to the king in Spain, and to offer him all the honour and assistance which one prince can offer another.
