half a hide in Attelestuna adjoining the coppice, as his inheritance (tanquam
hereditatem suam), thoroughly free and quit as much as was in his power
to do so, the King's right excepted, in the same way his grandfather had
held it. He confessed that his father and himself had unjustly reduced
the aforesaid half rood from frank almoin to villenage (ab elemosina in
servitutem injuste redegisse). Wherefore being truly penitent he renders
it free and quit to God and St. Mary and William, the prior, for the
souls of his father and himself, and for the souls of all for whom it had at
first been given. He commands his heirs as they may hope to participate
