Grant by Nicholas de Anesty to the canons of Holy Trinity, London, for the souls of himself, Margaret his wife, and others, of the land the canons held of Richard his grandfather and Hubert his father at Berkedene; of the 4 librates of land Hubert his great grandfather gave them in Bracking manor (Braughing); release of any right he may have to present to Bracking church; and grant of 20 solidates of land in Teye, which his grandfather gave them. Grant by Hubert, son of Richard de Anesti, to the canons of Christchurch, London, of the land in Berkedene which his father Richard granted them; of four librates of land which his grandfather Hubert granted them in the manor of Brackinges (Braughing), part of the 16 librates that King Stephen and Queen Matilda gave the said Hubert, with a proviso that if the heirs of Stephen and Matilda give him or his heirs 16 librates elsewhere in exchange, the canons shall have 4 librates of such exchanged land; of the land they had of his fee of Brackinges in the time of his father, and are to hold to the day he is made a knight; and of 20 solidates of land in Teye, which Hubert his grandfather gave them. Grant by Adam de Stratton, clerk, to Osbert de Waterford, of land of the fee of Richmond in Beneggho, which Adam had by gift of the prior and convent of Bermundesey, at a yearly rent of 9s. 9d., with clause for distraint on the said land and other possessions of Osbert in co. Grant by Richard, the prior, and the canons of Holy Trinity, London, to Robert de Sandon, smith, of a messuage and land that Hugh Smith formerly held in Brakking (Braughing), situation accurately described, on payment of 6d. yearly and performance of various smith's services herein specified. Indenture of agreement whereby Thomas le Verly, of Little Hadham, and Alice his wife, demise to John de Melkleye certain land, a messuage in New Street,[Staundon: see A. 1013], land in 'le Holme,' Monemad and Wychemers, and a yearly rent of 3s. 1½d. in Staundone, if they do not by sunset on the morrow of Michaelmas, 13 Edward I., pay him the price of 12 quarters of wheat wherewith he has accommodated them: the grant of the premises, by consent of the parties, being placed in the hands of Benedict Bolt till the above-named date. Grant by Thomas le Verly, of Staundon, and Alice his wife, daughter of John Pake, to John de Melkeleye, of all their claim to the dower that Agnes, formerly wife of the said John Pake, holds after his death in Staundon: Alice making oath on the high altar at Staundon never at or after the decease of the said Agnes to make any claim thereto. Grant by Silvester son of Walter, to W. de Cleresvaus, of the land his father Walter held in Senly, with the dower his mother Matilda sold him for 20s. in the court of Alan de Sumer, for 40 years, paying yearly half a marc to the said Alan. Grant by John le Bel, son of John le Bel, to John, the prior, and the canons of Holy Trinity, London, of a messuage and land at Rifford in Lefstanecherch parish; of any right he has to the dower that Albretha, his father's wife, held of his fee; of several annual rents due from the people specified herein for lands in Apsedene, Wakele, and elsewhere in co. Herts.; and of land in Refeld called 'Pyridune': for which grant the canons have given 15s. to pay his debts, and will give to him or his assigns daily, as long as he lives at London, a white loaf and a gallon of ale, such as they receive in the refectory, either daily or twice or thrice a week, as he requires. [Herts.] A. 1033. Indenture between Henry Elveden, son and heir of Thomas Elveden, and heir of John Elveden, his grandfather, and the convent of Holy Trinity, London. After reciting a grant by Richard de Gatesbury to St. Peter's church of Bracking, which belongs to the canons of Holy Trinity, of the chapel of St. James in Gatesbury, with all tithes in the said parish (except the tithe of 40 acres in the field called 'Litelredyng,' which the nuns of Halywell hold of Richard), on condition of the canons celebrating four masses weekly in the chapel of Gatesbury, Elveden agrees with the canons to commute the four masses for two, to be celebrated weekly in the chapel of Holy Trinity, within the nave of the conventual church. Has granted to Sir Hugh le Despenser the annual rent of a marc which the said Robert was wont to pay him, and the knight's fee he held of him in Coleshulle, and therefore directs him to answer for the said rent and fee to the said Sir Hugh. Grant by Hubert, the Queen's Chamberlain, to the canons of Christchurch, London, of four librates of land in Braching manor, by gift of Agnes his wife and Richard and John his sons, portion of the 16 librates that King Stephen and Queen Matilda gave him in exchange for his land of Benedis. Essex. A. 1045. Indenture witnessing that Sir Thomas de Maundevile, knt., lord of Brumfeld, has enfeoffed Simon the Marshal (Marescallum) of the New Temple, London, in his water-mill of Brumfeld, and the same Symon has delivered the mill to Sawal de Brumfeld and Ralph le Despenser, for three years from the quindene of Easter, 24 Edward I.; and that Sir Thomas has granted Sawal and Ralph timber and carriage for all necessary purposes for the mill, on condition of their restoring the mill in as good condition as they found it at the end of the three years, if they do not wish to hold it longer. Confirmation by Alan, son of Richard de Faversham, to the prior and canons of Holy Trinity, London, for 6s., of the release that Richard de Melcleia, son of Robert, made them of 15½ acres in Bracking; and release by the same to the same of the whole half virgate of land in the same place that his father Richard held of the priory, of which the 15½ acres are a portion.
