Marine Department
Secretary 1850-3
This office was created in 1850 with a salary of £800. (fn. 1) It ceased to exist in 1853 when the Secretary was appointed an Assistant Secretary to the Board. (fn. 2)
Clerks 1851-3
Two Clerks were apparently assigned to the Marine Department in 1851, the number being reduced to one in the following year. The remaining Clerk was absorbed into the ordinary establishment of the Board in 1853. (fn. 3) No information about their salaries has survived.
Professional Members 1850-70
Provision was made for two Professional Members, selected from amongst senior officers of the Royal Navy or Merchant Service, on the formation of the Marine Department in 1850. In 1853 they were placed under the immediate direction of the Board of Trade. Their salaries were originally £600. (fn. 4) In 1853 a scale was substituted beginning at £500 and rising by annual increments of £50 to £800. (fn. 5) In 1857 the starting level was raised to £600 and in 1863 fixed salaries of £800 were provided. (fn. 6)
