Writ to Robert Malet and Walter de Agmodesham to enquire whether the said John, who is in the king's wardship, is of full age, as he says, 13 Oct. 11 Edw. I.
Writ to the sheriff of Bedford to summon a jury and to warn the escheator and Thomas Inge, guardian of one part of the said heir's land, to be present, 13 Oct. 11 Edw. I.
Bedford. Proof of age, Thursday the morrow of the Purification, 12 Edw. I. (defective.)
He was born in Little Gravenhurst on the eve of the translation of St. Edward, 46 Hen. III., and baptized in the church there on the morrow; and this the jury know because they have been at the said town and in the church, and have diligently enquired the truth, viz.—from Mabel de la Porte, who carried him from the font and told them so on peril of her soul; and one Robert de la Porte of Little Gravenhurst took a certain land there for a term ... on the feast of St. Michael, 46 (Hen. III) of Robert son of Hugh of Great Gravenhurst, which term ended on the
feast of St. Michael, 10 Edw. I., and the said John was born on the eve ... (before ?) he took that land. Richard de Bray and William Inge had nothing to say why the king ought not to restore his inheritance to the said John.

502. Robert son of Robert de Derlegh alias de Derleye, de Drleg'.
Writ to the sheriff of Derby to summon a jury before Gervase de Wyleford (sheriff of Nottingham) and Hugh de Stapilford to enquire whether the said Robert, who was born and baptized at Potloc, is of full age, as he says, and to warn William de Hamelton, guardian of his land, to be present, 30 May, 11 Edw. I.
Derby. Proof of age, Saturday after the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 11 Edw. I.
The jury have been to the town and church of Potlac, and say that the said Robert is of full age.
Mandate to H. de Kendal and W. de Odiham to cause a writ of seisin to be made, 5 July.
Letter from William de Hamelton to the said Gervase and Hugh intimating that he could not restore the wardship of the manor of Wysowe without the writ of Sir J. de Lovetot.

Writ to the sheriff of Huntingdon to summon a jury before the king's justices at Salop to enquire whether the said Nicholas, who was born and baptized at Oeverton (alias Everton), and is in the king's wardship, is of full age, as he says, 17 April, 11 Edw. I., with Jury panel.
Huntingdon. Proof of age (undated).
The said Nicholas was of full age on the day of St. Nicholas 10 Edw. I.; and this the jury know because some of them have sons and daughters who are of the same age, some more some less.

Writ to the sheriff of Nottingham to summon a jury before Nicholas de Stapelton and Henry de Perepunt to enquire whether the said William, who is in the king's wardship, is of full age, as he says, 20 July, 11 Edw. I.
Mandate of scire facias from the said Nicholas and Henry to the sheriff of Buckingham, with Jury panel.
Nottingham. Proof of age, The day of St. Giles, 11 Edw. I.
The said William was born in the abbey of Lenton and baptized in the church there on Palm Sunday twenty-one years ago, and was of full age on Palm Sunday last, and ought to have his land.

505. Henry Wyger son and heir of John Wyger.
Writ to the sheriff of Devon to summon a jury before Thomas de Pyn and John, treasurer of the church of St. Peter, Exeter, to enquire whether the said Henry, who is in the king's wardship, is of full age, as he says, 18 April, 11 Edw. I.
Devon. Proof of age, Tuesday after the Ascension, 11 Edw. I.
He was born at Kystemelbrig' [alias Kustemelebrugg'], and baptized in the church of Esse Reygny, and is of the age of 22 years and more. Henry de Middelton and Grace his wife came not nor showed anything why the said Henry Wyger should not have his inheritance.
Order for a writ of plenius inquirendo to the Commissioners; and for a letter to the queen mother to grant the king 10 oaks in the woods of Deresle and Cotesle fit for the work of the castle and tower of Rokyngham.

[Devon.] Inq. Sunday after St. Bartholomew, 11 Edw. I.
John Wyger, father of Henry Wyger, deceased, held nothing of the king in chief, as of his crown, but held the manor of Brawode of the barony of Hurburton, which is in the king's hand by escheat through the death of Roger de Vautort, by service of 5 knights' fees with its members, whereby the king has the wardship of the said Henry and his land as wardship of wardship, and not otherwise. (See No. 265.)

506. Oliver de Langford.
Writ of ulterius certiorari whether the wardship of the lands and heirs of the said Oliver ought to pertain to the king by reason of his having held the manor of Kynewaldmersh of the honour of Peverel, which is the king's escheat, by serjeanty of finding a pack horse and a sack with a pin (brochia) for forty days in Wales, or of the acquisition of any other land by the said Oliver or his ancestors, 4 June, 11 Edw. I.
Derby. Inq. taken at Bollesovere on Tuesday before St. Michael, 11 Edw. I.
The jury have never known that the wardship of the lands and heirs of the said Oliver ought to pertain to the king by reason of the said serjeanty, or any other acquisition.
Writ to Alan de Walkingham and William de Meynil to enquire what lands &c. the said Oliver held in co. Derby, on the day he died, and whether king John had the wardship of the manors which are of the inheritance of John his son and heir, by reason of the minority of his ancestors, or their marriage, 14 Aug. 11 Edw. I.

Derby. Inq. Tuesday the eve of St. Michael, 11 Edw. I.
Kynewaldmersche. The manor with its members of Totelay and Dore, he held of the king in chief of the honour of Peverel by service of finding in the king's army in time of war in Wales a horse price 5s. and a sack and pin (brocheam) for carrying the king's arms for forty days at his own charges.
Barleburg and Whytewell. The manors with their members, held of William de Estotevill a Norman by service of 5 knights' fees.
Haversegge [alias Hathersegge]. The manor, held of Aunkerus de Freschanvill by service of 1 knight's fee.
Langeford. The manor, held of the bishop of Coventre and Lychefeld by service of 1 knight's fee.
King John had the wardship of the body of Matthew de Hathersegge, brother of Cecily, grandmother of the said Oliver, who died without heir of herself, by reason of the minority of the said Matthew, and the wardship of his lands, viz.—the manors of Kynwallmersche, Barleburg', Whytewell and Hathersegge, and gave the same and the marriage of the said Matthew to Philip Mark', who married him to Annora his daughter.

Derby. Inq. Wednesday after St. Hilary, 12 Edw. I.
Kynaldesm[ers]. The manor, which is the king's escheat of the honour of Peverel, held of the king, as abovesaid, but he held nothing of the king's crown.
Barlebur' and Wytewell. The manor with its members held of William Estotevill, as abovesaid.
Havessegd. The manor held of Anquerus de Freschevill, as abovesaid.
Langeford. The manor, held of the bishop of Chester for homage and service of 1 knight's fee.
King John never had the custody of the manors of Barlebur', Wytewell, Havessegd or Langeford, nor the marriage of any ancestor of John son and heir of the said Oliver; but Philip Mark, keeper of the Castle of Nottingham, in time of war took Matthew de Havessegd by force, led him to the castle and married him by force to his daughter. The bishop of Chester has always hitherto had the wardship and marriage of the said John's ancestors.
Writ of venire facias to the sheriff of Derby, to summon a jury before the aforesaid Alan and William for a similar enquiry, 10 Jan. 12 Edw. 1.

Cinevaldemers alias Cenewaldemers. The manor held of the king, as abovesaid.
Langeford. The manor held of the bishop of Chester, as abovesaid.
Haversege [alias Hatherseg']. The manor held of Ankerus de Frechewile, baron of Cryche, as abovesaid.
Barleburg [alias Barleburck] and Witewele. The manors held of William de Stotewile alias of the baron de Stotewile, as abovesaid.
King John had the custody of the aforesaid manors of Cynewaldemers, Haversegge, Barlburg and Witewele through Matthew de Haversegge who was under age, and gave the same and the marriage of the said Matthew to Philip Marcus his sheriff of Nottingham.

Writ to Thomas de Normanvill, escheator beyond the Trent, to come in person before the barons of the exchequer to certify the circumstances of an inquisition made concerning the lands &c. of the said Oliver, 27 June, 14 Edw. I.
Memorandum of writ of diem clausit extremum, 28 March, 11 Edw. 1.
Derby. Memorandum of inq. made at Chestrefeld on Wednesday before Easter, 11 Edw. I.
Kinewaldemerche in the wapentake of Scardesdale. The manor, held of the king of the honour of Peverel by serjeanty of finding a pack-horse, price 5s., with a sack and pin (brochia) for forty days in Wales.
Haversegg in the wapentake of High Peak. A moiety of the manor, held in chief of the lord of Crych, by service of ½ knight's fee.
Langeford. The manor with its members, held of the bishop of Chester in chief, service unknown.
Stafford. Aslacton. 1 knight's fee held of the same bishop in chief; and 1 knight's fee held of the baron of Stafford.
Derby. Barleburg and Whitewell in the wapentake of Scardeswell. A moiety of the manor held of Sir Robert de Estotevill by service of 5 knights' fees.
John his firstborn, aged 18, is his next heir.
Memorandum of writ of ulterius certiorari (undated).
Derby. Memorandum of inq. taken at Bollesovere, Wednesday before St. Michael, 11 Edw. I. (see similar writ and inq. No. 506). And afterwards the said lands, &c. were delivered to John Byran by a fine of 120 marks, by the king's writ.

508. William de Morteyn alias de Mortayn.
Mandate from H. de Bray the king's escheator to his sub-escheator in co. Leicester, reciting writ of 15 Nov. 11 Edw. I.
Leicester. Inq. Tuesday the morrow of St. Lucy, 12 Edw. I.
Brantestun. The manor with the advowson of the church (extent given) held of the bishop of Lincoln by service of 1 knight.
Mistirtun. The service of 1 knight's fee with the advowson of a moiety of the church, held of the said bishop by service of 1 knight.
He held nothing of the king in chief in the county.
He died on the day of St. Leonard last. Roger son of Roger de Mortein, of full age before All Saints last, is his next heir.
Similar mandate to the sub-escheator in co. Lincoln, reciting writ of 15 Nov. 11 Edw. I.
Lincoln. Inq. Wednesday after St. Nicholas, 12 Edw. I.
Dounesby. The manor (extent given) jointly held by the said William and Joan his wife, of the gift of Master Thomas de Lichefeld, to be held to them and the heirs of their bodies with remainder to Roger de Morteyn, nephew of the said William, and his heirs, of the bishop of Lincoln by service of 1 knight.
He held nothing of the king in chief in the county.

Writ to Thomas de Normanvile, escheator beyond Trent, 15 Nov. 11 Edw. I.
[Stafford.] Extent, Friday after St. Nicholas, 12 Edw. I.
Walesale. A moiety of the manor (extent given) held of the king as a free farmer for 40s. yearly at the king's exchequer.
Heir as above, aged 21 at the last feast of St. Denis.
Derby. Inq. Saturday after St. Lucy, 12 Edw. I.
Eyum. The manor (extent given) with the advowson of the church, held of the king in chief of the fee of Peverell by homage and service of 1 knight.
Rysley. The manor (extent given) held of Robert Pavely by service of 1 knight's fee.
La Foulowe by Eyum. A messuage, 20a. land and 40s. 2d. rent, whereof the said William and Joan his wife were enfeoffed by one Robert Cosyn, to be held for their lives, with remainder to Roger de Mortayn and his heirs, rendering one rose yearly.
Date of death as above. Heir as above, aged 21 on the feast of St. Michael last.
Nottingham. Extent, Sunday after St. Nicholas, 12 Edw. I.
Wllaton and Cossale. The manors (extents given) including 20s. rent from the prior of Lenton for a mill, a mine of sea coal, and the advowsons of the church of Wllaton and chapel of Cossale, held of the king in chief of the fee of Peverell by service of 1 knight.

Gloucester. Inq. 10 March, 15 Edw. I.
Dimmok manor. Two parts of a messuage at Kedeford, 11s. 1½d. rent with the farm of the mill, 32a. arable, 2a. meadow, 2a. pasture, and a grove, held as free socage of the abbot of Flexleie, farmer of the same manor, which is of the king's ancient demesne, by service of 10s. yearly, and tallage when the king shall tax his demesnes.
Bromesberue. 1 virgate land held of the heirs of Robert de Penedok by service of 3s. 6d. yearly.
Maud late the wife of the said John is dowered of a third part of the above.
The said John and Rose his first wife purchased the said tenement in Dimmok of Robert Malet, and the tenement in Bromesberue of William de la Hulle, to them and the heirs of their bodies, and after the death of the said John, Agnes the wife of Ivo de Clintone, daughter of the said John and Rose, and heir of the said tenement, who was then 14, entered upon the same through the said abbot, to whom she made oath of fealty and gave 10s. for her relief.
He died about the feast of the Ascension, 11 Edw. I.

Hereford. Brumfeld. A messuage &c., 2 carucates land, 47s. 8d. rent of assize, 2 little fishponds, 3a. meadow &c.
All held of the king in chief by serjeanty of keeping all the king's forests in co. Salop.
Hugh his son is his next heir and of full age.
Mandate to Hugh de Kendale to cause the said heir to have seisin of his inheritance, the king having accepted his fealty, 5 Aug. 12 Edw. I.

[Salop.] Extent, Wednesday after St. Lucy, 12 Edw. I.
Moneton. A messuage, 20a. land in demesne, 3a. meadow, a sixth part of a mill, and 15s. 8d. rent of assize, held of the king in chief of the inheritance of Alice his wife, daughter of Peter de Muneton, for the keeping of the king's Hays of Hauechurste, Bismore, and Longe Munede.
Berewike. 1 carucate land, and 5s. 2d. and 1lb. cummin rent of assize, held of Richard son of John son of Alan [who is in the king's wardship] for 1 knight's fee, by service of doing guard at the castle of Oswestry (Album Monasterium) with one man with an unbarded horse at his own charges for forty days when war shall happen between the king and the Welsh.
Peter his son, is his next heir and of full age.

Writ to brother Robert de Valle Regali, escheator in co. Chester, 4 Feb. 12 Edw. I.
Chester. Inq. Thursday after St. Peter in Cathedra, 12 Edw. I.
Storton. 2 carucates land in demesne, a windmill, a watermill, and 9l. 3s. 11d. rent of assize there, 2s. rent in Weyeleye, and 12d. rent in Makelisfeld, held of the king in chief by service of keeping the king's forest of Wyrhal' as chief forester, which office is worth 4l. yearly beyond costs.
His daughters, Joan aged 20, Ellen aged 9, and Agnes aged 8, are his next heirs.
Writ of plenius certiorari whether the said Joan contracted marriage 'per verba de presenti' with William de Stanleye, as is said, and whether before or after her father's death, and before whom, and in what words, 27 Feb. 12 Edw. I.
Chester. Inq. Saturday after St. Chad, 12 Edw. I.
Cradoc de Greves sworn and examined says that William de Stanleghe contracted marriage with the abovesaid Joan, saying 'Joan I give thee my troth to have and hold thee for my lawful wife to my life's end,' and the said Joan gave him her troth by like words; it was before the death of the said Philip, on Sunday after St. Matthew two years ago, before Adam de Hoton and Dawe de Coupeland, at the church of Asteburi; for the said Philip, his wife and family, were at a banquet (convivium) of Master John de Stanleghe, and Joan doubting that her father would marry her to a son of her stepmother, on that occasion accepted the said William as her husband. Robert de Bebinton and many others agree; Adam de Hoton, Dawe de Coupelaund and others agree, except as to the form of words used, viz.—'I William take thee Joan as my lawful wife, and thereto give thee my troth,' and the said Joan replied 'I Joan take thee William as my lawful husband.'

Lincoln. Inq. Sunday after the Purification, 12 Edw. I.
Suthkeleseye. A capital messuage with fishpond &c., a toft, and 32a. arable were held by the said Brice; but he held nothing of the king in chief on the day he died, for three days before he enfeoffed John his son of all his lands in Suthkeleseye, which were held of the king in socage by free service of 5s. to the farm of the soke of Castre, and 2½d. to the heirs of Nicholas le Juvene, who do suit for the said lands &c. at the king's court of Castre, of which heirs the said Brice held by the service aforesaid; and there are there 15a. meadow held of the prior &c. of Newstead (Novi Loci) on Ankolme.

Writ, 12 June, 12 Edw. I.
Lincoln. Inq. Ascension Day, 13 Edw. I.
Herthewyk [and Nettelton]. A capital messuage, 40a. arable in demesne, 14a. meadow, 32s. 2d. rent of assize, and 1 qr. of salt, held of John de Nevyl, rendering a pair of spurs yearly; 4½a. arable held of John son of Beatrice de Nettelton, rendering 2d. yearly; a toft and 10a. arable held of William Malet, rendering 2s. yearly; ½a. arable held of Roger Freeman, rendering ½d. yearly; and 1a. arable and ½a. meadow held of Robert Blaunchard, rendering ½d. yearly. Agnes late the wife of the said William is dowered of the above to the value of 23s. 4d. yearly, nor has more because Hawis mother of the said William was dowered of the said tenements wholly and lived after his death.
Nicholas his son, aged 22 on the feast of St. Michael, 13 Edw. I., is his next heir.

Writ, 2 Nov. 12 Edw. I.
Wilts. Inq. Tuesday before St. Thomas the Apostle, 13 Edw. I.
Great Wichford in the hundred of Brenchesburg'. A capital messuage &c., 36a. arable in demesne, 2a. meadow, and 14s. from three free tenants, held of the king in chief for his homage and by service of keeping a moiety of the forest of Groveley towards the north; and he rendered 20s. to the hospital of Bradele, which rent King Henry the king's father gave to the hospital in frank almoin, and 2s. to the smithy of the church of St. Mary, Salisbury; and 18a. arable and ½a. meadow, held of the fee of Maurice de Bonham and Edmund Spigurnel, rendering 9½d. yearly.
Stoford by Wichford. A capital messuage &c., 60a. arable in demesne, and 1¼a. meadow, held of the fee of the abbess of Wilton by socage, rendering 9s. 3¼d. yearly.
He died on Saturday before SS. Simon and Jude, 12 Edw. I. William his son, aged 28 at the feast of St. Martin, 12 Edw. I., is his next heir.

[Derby.] Inq. Thursday the feast of St. Hilary, 12 Edw. I. (defective.)
Staynesby. The manor, held of the king in chief by service of a sore sparrowhawk or 2s. at the king's exchequer yearly; whereof Hawis la Sauvage his mother is dowered of 6l. 15d. land, and 76s. 8d. land for warranty of other lands. He held nothing else beyond the Trent.
John his son, ... two years, is his next heir.
